Classes Offered...

Puppy Preschool

Puppies 24 weeks and older are strongly encouraged to begin at the Basic Obedience level.

Begins:

Time: runs for 4 weeks.
Cost: $40
Puppy Preschool is 4 weeks long. Each session is an hour long plus question and answer time. This class includes basic obedience commands, socialization, etiquette training, personality assessment and composition of a customized life-long training program for the owner to use when working with their pet.

Basic Obedience

Time: runs for 8 weeks
Cost: $75
Basic Obedience class is 8 weeks long. Each session is an hour long plus question and answer time. This class includes basic obedience commands, distraction training, individual and group training command work, and extension of time and distraction work. There will also be an introduction to advanced obedience command work.

Intermediate Obedience

Begins: e-mail Elizabeth at to find out when the next session of classes begins
Time: runs for 8 weeks.
Cost: $85
Intermediate Obedience class runs for 8 weeks. Each session is an hour long plus post-class exercise/advisement time. This class teaches advanced training commands (including duration and distraction work). The AKC Canine Good Citizen testing will be held at the end of the 8 sessions. The fee for this test is included in the class enrollment fee.

Introduction to Agility & Tricks

Time: runs for 4 weeks.
Cost: $35 (there must be a minimum of 5 dogs enrolled for class to begin)
Intermediate Obedience class runs for 4 weeks and must have a minimum of 5 dogs enrolled before this class can be held. Each session is an hour long plus ½ hour post-class playtime. This class teaches jumping skills, weaves, and balance skills. All skills are introduced in a fun and easy-going environment. Teach your dog simple tricks to impress your friends!

Pet Therapy Classes

two, 2-hour sessions
Cost: $35
For anyone wishing to be involved in pet therapy. This class discusses how you can help others (such as those in nursing homes) by managed interactions with your pet. An in depth view at the successes and enrichment of everyone involved. Persons may have rabbits, guinea pigs, dogs, or other very even tempered, very well behaved, well groomed, clean animals that can visit residents of nursing homes. This is an introductory view at pet therapy for interested parties. Even if persons do not own their own pet, German Shepherd Rescue will provide loving rescue dogs for interested parties to handle with patients. Volunteers are needed in the community and German Shepherd Rescue would like to be the leading force of promoting regular, well organized pet therapy to nursing facilities and other interested care facilities. There will be 2 two hour classes involving instruction, preparation, and materials. You may bring your pet to class, and available therapy friends (rescue dogs) will also be present. The class fee will cover expenses and materials.

Introduction to Being a Foster Home

Time: two, 2-hour sessions
Cost: $5 for materials (refundable upon involvement in the program)
These classes will introduce interested parties to Central Illinois German Shepherd Dog Rescue history and mission and to its beloved residents searching for homes. Expectations, requirements, and events will be discussed. Different facets of foster care will be discussed to determine the right match for every individual and family's needs. Emergency foster, transport, overnights, rescue rest stops, foster care until adoption, availability expectations, volunteer work at adoption fairs and showings, and availability for potential adopters will be discussed. You will also review the Foster care agreement and release and meet the crew. A small fee of $5.00 (to cover materials) will be charged, but will be refunded upon involvement in the program. Behavior Counseling

Time & Cost: $65-85/hour
Behavior Counseling treats problem behaviors and aggression disorders. Initial assessment takes about 1 to 1 and a half hours. Most problems can be alleviated within 4 sessions. Follow-up phone calls are included in the cost. House calls are available, especially if problems are related to the home environment.

Elizabeth Riddle, our rescue president, outside of her full-time job and continuing educational pursuits, is an animal behaviorist and an obedience instructor, with a Bachelor's degree in Biology from the University of Illinois with a specialty in Ethology (the study of animal behavior).
