Big John's Story

Big John is a 3 year old, black and tan, male, neutered German Shepherd and is a success of the Match a Pet program.

He was rescued at Terra Haute and provided exceptional care and love by their staff. They contacted us for his rescue, and we knew of a family that was looking for a dog just like Big John.

Big John will be headed to his new life and home soon, but there has been a slight road block on this pathway to happiness. Big John was found to be heartworm positive and is being sponsored by us for treatment. Our vet will be treating him this week. The immiticide treatment is $135.00 Chest X-ray $51.30 Pre-op blood screen $35.00

John is 64 pounds on an enormous frame. He should be about 95 pounds. He is very active and agile, he hopped into the truck very easily and seemed happy to be heading out of the shelter.

He has had a rough month.

  • He was running loose.
  • He is very skinny and had no medical treatment from whomever owned him previously.
  • He has gotten heartworm this year (low antigen result).
  • He has been caught by the Terra Haute doggie police.
  • He has spent two weeks in the shelter (though they took exceptional care, Shepherds do not often show their appreciation in a kennel environment).
  • He has been transported for medical treatment.
  • He had blood drawn (again and again).
  • He had another vet exam after being neutered the day before.
  • He is scheduled for the not-so-fun heartworm treatment (a big needle into the spinal muscles, ugh...).

He seriously cannot wait for his new home who's parents visited him today and are in love. They have a very nice rural home with a sister waiting for him to have a clear bill of health and a good bath (which he can't have for a week since he was just neutered)!

If you would like to help sponsor Big John's treatment, please consider a small donation to offset his medical expenses. Thank you.
