Update January 12, 2008
Her medical hold is completely lifted!
Lizzie (Gala) was our little radar puppy. She was adopted at 5 months old and everything seemed to go fine. We received a call a few months later from a girlfriend. We returned the call twice without a return call. Then, we received a call from an animal control that Lizzie was in the pound. We called the owner and he said she got out after an ice storm knocked down part of his fence. Then he said he had given her away to two farms, and she didn't work out (breech of contract).
We REQUIRE that our dogs be returned to us if for any reason the adopter can no longer keep their pet. This is for the life of the dog.
So, we made arrangements to return her to us. She is finally home with a suspicious medical history involving a poorly documented broken leg. She is a bit sore in her hind end, so she is receiving a complete workup to determine if she will require surgery. We have no idea what happened in 1 year and 2 months. We are getting vague answers and facing a very reluctant veterinarian who still has not released the previous medical records (highly unusual).
We take this very seriously as we try to promise our babies that they will get a good home after living through hell to wind up in rescue to begin with. Our fury is unexplainable when an adopter screws up. We will do everything we can to fix whatever they have done, and we will have updates as her condition information becomes more clera. Lizzie will need a loving home of her very own (that will not be stupid) following this new ordeal.
If you love dogs and have a soft caring soul and think you could love Lizzie (Gala) please let us know.
Update April 2, 2007
Lizzie was positive for Ehrlichiosis on her exam. It is a tick borne disease usually found in the south and Lizzie had been living in Southern Missouri.
Lizzie must take several weeks of antibiotics to try to rid her body of the illness. She is not showing any signs or symptoms, but it was caught with a routine heartworm antigen screening test that also screens for this condition.
She runs and plays and dances around without any pain or problems. We also did receive the x-rays from the former veterinarian and she has confirmed the beginning of hip dysplasia. Again, Lizzie is showing no signs or symptoms. She runs and plays and dances around without any pain or problems.
Our veterinarian gave us a packet to be sent home with Lizzie's new family (whomever that may be) explaining management and care. Most likely Lizzie will have some arthritis in the future, but with proper diet, exercise and her weight staying very lean, we all hope she can live a fairly normal life.
Surgery is a final option, not a first line therapy and she is no where near needing any types of intervention at this time except, of course, her need for a loving home.
Update January 12, 2008
Lizzie had her re-check at the veterinarian and was Erlichia Negative!!!! Finally, some good news.
Her platelets count was completely normal and the antibiotics finally beat the Erlichia. Her medical hold is completely lifted, treatments are completed, and our favorite little sweetheart is ready for her new home.
